4-2-1 Design: Why Every Curve Matters

By Fausto Lettieri·March 17, 2026

The Science of 4-2-1

Exhaust header design is one of the most critical decisions in designing a high-performance exhaust system. But why is the 4-2-1 so special?

What 4-2-1 Means

The name describes the tube configuration:
  • 4 primary tubes exit the cylinder head
  • They merge into 2 secondary tubes
  • Which converge into 1 final tube
  • The Physical Principle

Every time an exhaust valve opens, it generates a pressure wave. In 4-2-1 design, tube lengths are calculated to create a "scavenging" effect - the pressure wave from the previous cylinder helps extract gases from the next cylinder.

    The Benefits

  • More power - up to +15 HP on some engines
  • More linear torque - power distributed across the entire rev range
  • Distinctive sound - the typical "raspy" note of Italian V8s
  • Our Philosophy

Every header we build is calculated specifically for that engine. There are no universal solutions.
